Unearthing Absence: The Quest for Mel's Hole
A novel by Josh Grosse
For his undergraduate thesis, Josh Grosse decided to write and illustrate his own short novel about the mysterious Mel's Hole. Grosse uses this central figure to connect his three protagonists as they quest to find the fabled hole and fill lost parts of themselves. This gripping story unfolds through prose, poetry, travel logs, paintings, and illustrations. Grosse, being a phenomenally talented artist, had all the tools to write and illustrate his story. My hand in this work was only as a design consultant, typesetter, and organizer. I  helped Grosse create a structure for this multi-faceted novel and encouraged his vision to hold to book design standards. Through organizing all the assets and illustrations for this project and developing a flexible yet consistent page layout, I helped Grosse bring his novel to life on double-page spreads and get it ready for print.
